According to Mike Robbins, "the difference between the "clone" and the original is that the clones have a flat center section w/ a 4 or 5" hole in the center. The original McAfees have a "snout" about 2" long in the center and came with the choice of a 3-legged fake knock-off hub or the plain caps. The story as given to me in 1969 by Dick Lovell, then owner of Performance Products, was that Volvo had the wheels designed, tooling made and a bunch of wheels produced with the plan to use them on the P1800. For whatever reason, they changed their mind. The wheels produced did not have the stud holes drilled in them. Jack McAfee, well known Porsche race driver, VW dealer, etc, bought the wheels from Volvo and had the Porsche Disc brake pattern holes drilled in them. He then approached Lovell about marketing them....which he did. In '69 I visited Performance Products with the plan to purchase a set of the wheels. Lovell talked me out of it and told me he was no longer selling them. Too many problems. They are heavy. The offset is wrong. Many of them had the bolt circle off center. They were hard to balance. He said more than half of what he sold had been returned. A few months later I bought a set from a private party and discovered they wouldn't fit the rear unless the body was widened for clearance (which I did). They definitely affect the handling of the car...negatively...offset and weight.
