“Overcoming the Overthinking” is a collection of former FOG President Alan Winer’s “President’s Perspectives” columns: stories about driving, fixing, and enjoying our 356s.

Alan writes with honesty, humor, and real-world experience that any 356 owner can relate to. The booklet has been well received by members and is an enjoyable, down-to-earth read for anyone who loves these cars.

Singer 1959 Convertible D outlaw

From Tony Singer - A Pair of Outlaws

In the late 1990's I decided to build a car for California Mille type rallye events. For one thing, it had to have decent weather protection.  While I loved the Speedster, that was not in the cards.

Instead, I decided upon a 1959 Convertible D outlaw.  As I had previously owned a 1959 Carrera GS/ST speedster, I loved its clean look.  Alex Bivens, of Costa Mesa, did the work and we corroborated on it weekly. Every system on the car was improved, including the 912 engine. So this D became a GT clone and was likely one of the earliest "outlaw" restorations on such a car.  To this day it turns heads wherever I take it.

At some point, in the early/mid 2000's, my car became the inspiration for a similar treatment on a 1963 356 B Coupe.  It was beautifully done and moved on to another owner. About 16 months ago I, quite by accident, was able to purchase that precise car.  It now has a Willhoit/Loop 1950cc 912 engine.

So now I have this lovely pair of GT outlaw clones.

From Joel Jensen - A Love Affair

1963 B S Sunroof  Built early August 1962, the month I turned 18 and joined the 101st Airborne for 3 years.  Leaf Green, an early 911 912 color.

While passing through this space, if we're lucky there are a few companions that accompany us for much of the journey.   Wives, children and their progeny may be among them, but for those of us enamored of these cars, there may also be other long term relationships. I was first introduced to Freyja in 1984 while answering an ad in the Registry for a 55 Speedster and a 63 Sunroof B S coupe. The owner and I became friends and over the next years I had an on again off again series of attempts to purchase her.

She eventually went to a new owner in the Sierra Foothills and vanished from view. In 2001 I was at the old Sam's Town on Highway 50 waiting for other 356CAR members to arrive for a foothill wine tour and was approached by a local in a 930 P Car who informed me that he had a car like mine for sale and hadn't had any luck  selling it locally.  I arranged to meet him after the tour, and in a perfect moment of serendipity, it turned out to be the same car from my past.

I have owned her ever since and have made many changes to her over that time that reflect all the many changes that have occurred in my journey.
This was her original livery, 963 356 B S  Sunroof Coupe.  Matching numbers and highly optioned from the factory.  Originally Slate Gray, Red vinyl with red corduroy inserts. Headrest, deluxe horn ring, luggage rack, chrome wheels, Becker Europa radio and sunroof.  Little remains other than her mechanicals and much of her original chrome bits and other items like insulation, her original lubricated tie rod ends and other peripheral bits.

My Wife of 58 years, Patricia and I have gone to a few North/South events in Cambria, SLO and Morro Bay, travelled the North Coast and Wine Country many times, great roads, restaurants and memories with my other long term lady. A mistress that is welcome on the journey !! The best kind of mid life crisis. Picking up the Grandsons from school, going to the Werks Reunion, Luft 9, and multiple concours with them as they grew older including this year's Ironstone Concours accompanied by our Daughter.

Exposing them all to other's with my welcome obsession at 356CAR Gatherings of the Faithful and all the wonderful drives and photo ops with that club. Attending two West Coast Holidays, taking a third in B closed at the 2008 Squaw Valley event and just taking her out on the wonderful 45 minute loop through the wine country that has served as my always available happy place for over 50 years.

These are some of the best times in my life and I hope theirs as well. We rarely do any of that now, time, entropy, and the resultant physiological outcomes are unavoidable. If you're lucky enough to get there, the memories that include all those great times on the road are panacea for whatever comes.

Drive them while you can, life is short and true times of joy few and fleeting.

From the November / December 2021 Registry Magazine - With Bonus Photos

Since the first gathering in 2011, the Southern 356 Drive in Helen, Georgia, has remained true to its roots. “People, fun, and cars” is the formula George Bryan and Leonard Scrantz established for the first Georgia Mountain Party and each year the organizational team has made it happen. It is no surprise the event sold out within 62 hours of online registration opening this April. Seventy-one registered vehicles arrived with 142 attendees, from 19 different states. Approximately 43 percent of attendees were first-timers, all online forum members who got the jump on non-forum club members.
